There is a wide range of wonderful products that will appeal to creators and the Canon G7x Mark I and the subsequent model Canon Powershot G7x Mark II are very popular among online video creators. When it comes to making of high quality videos, Canon cameras are creators’ favorites.

Both are very portable cameras and offer excellent image quality, but there are certainly some differences in the two models. In this post, we will compare the two cameras to see if there are significant differences between the two and if there is any justification to spend the extra cash for the improved version or if the former one offers more value for money.

As a beginning “vlogger” or “youtuber” myself, I’ve been trying to replicate the same things that those who have been successful are doing. What better place to find these people than YouTube itself? Notable YouTubers who use the Canon Powershot G7x Mark ii is Mike Vestil, and Think Media.

Design and Handling

In terms of design, the CANON G7x Mark I and Canon G7x Mark II are almost the same. They are efficiently built to offer premium set of specification in a pocket-friendly body. The Mark II, however, slightly edges the Mark I in designs and handling. It looks sleeker and the new rubber grip on the front part of the camera makes handling of the camera quite easier.

In both cameras, the buttons are located on the right-hand side, but they are also slightly different. The buttons in Mark II are a little bigger and therefore easier to operate. It will be easier to find the Record button, for instance, in the Mark II. Though it is not particularly harder to use the Mark I, it is comparatively easier to use the Mark II.

In terms of size, the Mark II is slightly bigger than the Mark I and weighs 11.28oz (320g) compared to 10.68oz (303g) of Mark I. This puts both models right under 1lb.

Screen

For digital cameras, screen is a very essential feature. As a matter of fact, the two cameras have amazing screens that display great pictures. You will note the difference in the screen only when you pay attention while using the cameras. The display of the Mark II is obviously better than that of the Mark I. The rear LCD in Mark II, which is touch sensitive and allows for quick settings can also tilt 45 degrees down, making for better handling.

Processor

Furthermore, the processor is a vital feature that should be put into consideration when choosing cameras. Canon made a major improvement in the later model of the G7x cameras. In the Mark I, the DIGIC 6 image processor was used. During the launch of the Mark II, it came with an improved processors, the DIGIC 7. The newer model actually was the first Canon camera with the processor.

The Menu System

This is another major point of differentiation in the two cameras. The amount of options you have in terms of settings differs in the two cameras. In Mark II, the menu is well laid out and has few more options than in Mark I. The most significant options, for creators, will include the picture profiles, and the color temperature. You have more control in those areas in the Mark II.

For the Mark I, the picture profile setting is quite limited. In fact, it allows only one picture profile setting while the Mark II allows for three custom profiles. In Mark I, the setting of the color temperature is quite limited. There are two available presets; auto and white balance. Mark II, however, there are more options. You also have more control over the contrast and saturation. This makes the process of recording high quality videos easier.

Other Major Differences

There are few other differences between the two cameras that are worth mentioning.

The bit depth of Mark II is 14-bit while that of Mark I is 12-bit.

For photos, the Mark II stills at up to 8 FPS continuous shooting rate, but in the Mark I, it is only 6.5 FPS. The newer version (Mark II) also allows for shooting of 1080P at 24FPS.

Conclusion

To be honest, the two cameras are both great cameras for personal and family use. They will also be great for vloggers and other online video creators. The Canon G7x Mark ii specs has many similarities as the Mark i, but as mentioned before, there  has been some great upgrades.

The difference between the two is not much (especially in terms of picture quality of the videos they produce), but that doesn’t mean spending the extra cash to buy the Mark II wouldn’t be worth it. The Mark II offers better grip, easier handling and ease of operation, as well as better control. Any of the two will be great, but if you can afford it, go for the Mark II.
